The Third Annual J.R. Schoen Forever Memorial Walk took place Sunday, October 10th, 2011 commencing at Pear Tree Point beach. J.R. Schoen would have turned twelve years old that day had it not been for the cruel brain tumor that claimed his life in July 2008.
Friendsand family of J.R., a Holmes School student, organized the JR Forever Memorial Walk in his honor. The walk raised funds for the Darien Youth Lacrosse Association and a new organization, JR’s Ray of Hope. JR’s Ray of Hope is a committee under the JR Schoen Memorial Foundation, Inc., that will support local families with school-aged children facing serious illness, injury or the loss of a family member. JR’s Ray of Hope will provide supplemental financial assistance to help these families in their time of need.
The Walk is a vivid reminder of an active young boy who relished sports and neighborhood gatherings.
"It's so wonderful to see the community come together to honor J.R.,” comments Sharon Schoen, mother of J.R. “ Thanks goes to Kimberly Servas who really pulls this whole walk together. It's an important part of the healing process for not only the adults but for the children, too. It helps them to know that they can do something positive in remembering their friend."
